How to play
Near the ground, grass and trees slow the wind, so it blows harder the higher you go. A kite flies on the air it meets: the wind, plus however fast you pull the line in.
- Let go and the reel lets line out slowly while the kite flies, so it climbs into stronger wind.
- In a lull (the grass goes pale and still) the kite starts to sink: hold to pull the line in and keep it flying.
- In a gust (the grass darkens and the air streaks) let go: the reel lets line out to ease the pull.
- Keep some line on the reel. If a strong gust comes once the reel has run out, or while you are pulling in, the line snaps. Pull a little in while the wind is steady to keep some in hand.
- A kite high overhead pulls less than one low in front of you, so a high kite rides a gust better.
- Watch the gusts and lulls cross the field from the left before they reach the kite.
Points for every second by how high the kite flies, 150 for each ribbon it flies through, and 500 if it is still up at sunset. The gusts grow stronger as the afternoon goes on. 5,000 brings the High flyer stamp.
